It has been long recognized that some of these microbes, such as mycorrhizal fungi or nitrogen fixing symbiotic bacteria, play important roles in plant performance by improving mineral nutrition. However, the full range of microbes associated with plants and their Marschner's Mineral Nutrition of Higher Plants.

This chapter provides a brief overview of the history of plant nutrition, defines the term “essential mineral element,” and groups these elements according to their biochemical behavior and physiological functions.

Plant quality is also controlled by genetic and physiological factors
